WHAT IS A BIRTH CHART

Birth chart of any individual is a graphical representation of the planet in the zodiac at the time of birth of those persons. A person comes into existence at a specific time, at a specific place. That is the first time when that person comes in direct contact with the surrounding world and its surroundings radiation and energies of various celestial bodies. Moreover the birth data of any individuals should be accurate. Any change in the time given to the astrologer to forecast a birth chart makes a lot of changes in the birth chart and other subsidiary charts and calculations. Like with any other science, the accuracy of the input data is very essential to get accurate output results, in this case accurate predictions.

COMPUTER CHART OR MANUAL CHART :

1. Now a day’s lot of good software are available in the market, which can compute the horoscope in a very little time. Although a manual chart takes lot of labour and time. Computer made horoscopes are cheaper and easily available. While on the subject of computer made horoscope, it has to be understood clearly that one must not depend, under any circumstance, on the prediction given by computers. So, the chart should be read from an expert astrologer.

2. For the greater accuracy in prediction astrologer should relate the birth chart with the other charts i.e. Hora, Dreshkana, Saptansha, Navamsha etc. The position of the planet should be judged in the other charts also.

3. Computers horoscope contains lots of tables and charts. Hardly, few astrologers know the exact uses of these tables and charts. For a better prediction it is necessary to check it with other parameters also.

COMPNENT OF A BIRTH CHART

The chart itself is a composition of three components superimposed on each other, having a relationship to each other and giving meaning to each other. The chart is the simplified representation of the sky, divided into 12 parts. There are twelve constellation-signs in the zodiac; so each sign must get representation on the chart. This chart is like a plan of the sky made on paper. The plan of the sky is divided in 12 parts. Each part is called a ‘house’ (or Bhava); the top most space is called the First house.

Each house has been allotted to represent an area of activity in our life – for instance mother and mother related events to the 4th house, marriage and life partner to the 7th house and so on. Detailed list of main subjects to be considered under each house is given in further chapters of this course

The central, top most space in the chart is the First house. Then, working anti-clockwise is the 2nd house, the 3rd house, the fourth house and so on. The position of each house is fixed.

This plan of the sky on paper is the first component of your birth chart. This consists of a chart with 12 fixed positions, called the houses. Mind you, the house ‘numbers’ are not actually written in the houses because the notation of the houses, beginning from the first house, is always fixed by convention and therefore not written into the chart.

THE MAJOR COMPONENTS OF A HOROSCOPE

1 - HOUSES

The 1st component of the system is Houses. They are also 12 in numbers. Each house has its own significance. The significations of the houses fructify under the planetary periods connected with them. This chart is like a plan of the sky made on paper. The plan of the sky is divided in 12 parts. Each part is called a ‘house’ (or Bhava); the top most space is called the First house.

Mind you, the house ‘numbers’ are not actually written in the houses because the notation of the houses, beginning from the first house, is always fixed by convention and therefore not written into the chart. I have explained this topic in a chapter of THE HOUSES.

Note: These numbers indicating the House number are not given on the chart and their placement is always fixed in each drawing of the chart. From your date, time of birth and place of birth, the rising sign on the ascendant is calculated, this is the rising Sign of the zodiac that was there in the eastern horizon particularly at that date, time and particular place. Since the signs of the zodiac are also in a fixed sequence, the rest of the zodiac belt can also be written down. This is the second component of the birth chart

2 - ZODIAC SIGNS

The 2nd component of the system is Signs. They are 12 in number and ruled by the planets. The zodiac cycle starts from Aries and complete it on Pisces. The astrologer identify a sign of Mool Trikon, Exaltion, Debiliation, Own Sign, Vargotam, etc. These are important for making a predictions.

S.No   Zodiac Sign Hindi Name Ruling Planet Degree

1 Aries Mesha Mars ( Mangal ) 0 - 30
2 Taurus Vrishabha Venus ( Shukra ) 60
3 Gemini Mithuna Mercury ( Budha ) 90
4 Cancer Karkataka Moon ( Chendra ) 120
5 Leo Simha Leo ( Surya ) 150
6 Virgo Kanya Mercury ( Budha ) 180
7 Libra Tula Venus ( Shukra ) 210
8 Scorpio Vrishchika Mars ( Mangal ) 240
9 Sagittarius Dhanu Jupiter ( Guru ) 270
10 Capricorn Makara Saturn ( Shani ) 300
11 Aquarius Kumbha Saturn ( Shani ) 330
12 Pisces Meena Jupiter ( Guru ) 360

The second component overlap the first component. Being with the first house of the chart and write the sign-number of the rising sign in the First house (North Indian System). Working anti-clockwise on the chart, complete the sequence of the rest of the signs of the zodiac. For instance, if the rising sign of a person is Cancer (sign no. 4), put down the numeral 4 in the first house of the chart. Next, working anti-clockwise put down the other signs in sequence, e.g., Leo (no. 5) in second house, Virgo (no. 6) in third house and so on till Gemini (i. e., Rasi No. 3) occupies the last house ie 12th house. Check in below Diagram :

3 - PLANETS

This is the 3rd Components of a planets. The planets are main in astrology. In Vedic Astrology, we consider the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Where The Sun and the moon are luminaries, Rahu & Ketu are the shadow planets. I have explained this topic in a chapter of THE PLANETS. Once the position of each planet is known, enter each of them with the appropriate sign in the chart (for instance, from our above example, enter Mars on the sign of Aquarius, and so on). This is the third component of the chart. With the three components in position, it completes our chart.

4 - PLANETARY PERIODS

The forth compnent is Dasa System or Planetary Periods. The planets give the results of the general significance and houses ruled by them in their periods according to their strength in a horoscope. Discuss in further next lessons.

POSITION OF HOUSES, SIGNS & PLANETS

From your date, time of birth and place of birth, the rising sign on the ascendant is calculated, this is the rising Sign of the zodiac that was there in the eastern horizon particularly at that date, time and particular place. Since the signs of the zodiac are also in a fixed sequence, the rest of the zodiac belt can also be written down. This is the second component of the birth chart.

The second component on the first component. Being with the first house of the chart and write the sign-number of the rising sign in the First house (North Indian System). Working anti-clockwise o the chart, complete the sequence of the rest of the signs of the zodiac. For instance, if the rising sign of a person is Scorpio (sign no. 8), put down the numeral 8 in the first house of the chart. Next, working anti-clockwise put down the other signs in sequence, e.g., Sagittarius (no. 9) in second house, Capricorn (no. 10) in third house and so on till Libra (i. e., Rasi No. 7) occupies the last house.

We are discussing the things here in a North Indian Chart :

HOW DO THE PLANETS COME IN ALL THIS

The daily movement of the all the planets is calculated and recorded in book form called the Panchang.

From the panchanga , you can get the pre-calculated position of each and every planet for any particular day in the relevant year. The position is given in terms of Signs or Rashis. For instance, Mars may be shown as traversing through Aries. It means that on that particular day, the position of Mars was coinciding with the position of the constellation-sign Aries. Thus Mars is said to be in Aries. This may be verified by any astronomical laboratory or from the data issued in newspapers. The system of tracking and marking the position of heavenly bodies is the same in Astronomy and Astrology.

Once the position of each planet is known, enter each of them with the appropriate sign in the chart (for instance, from our above example, enter Mars on the sign of Aquarius, and so on). This is the third component of the chart. With the three components in position, it completes our chart.

A chart constructed from date of birth, time of birth and place of birth is called the Birth- Chart. There is much scope for research and expansion on the calculation side of casting the horoscope, because science has no limits, but whatever progress has been made so far on the calculation side can be deemed to be sufficient for making predictions correctly to a great extent. Though most calculations have been computerized, some of the very minute and specific calculations have not yet been programmed into any software.

Experience has it that analysis of the computerized software in matchmaking; business partnership, litigation and political opposition/competition have been found to be rather misguiding and sometimes far removed from reality.

Thus it has to be clearly understood that accuracy of predications would primarily depend on the accuracy of the determination of the sign of zodiac (Rasi) rising in the Eastern Horizon at the time of birth or putting a question. The Sign of the zodiac rising (or present) on the Eastern Horizon is known as the Lagna or Ascendant. Once the Ascendant (Lagna) has been determined, the chart is cast and the planetary positions are shown according to the Sign of the zodiac (Rasi) occupied by each planet at that time of birth or putting a question.

For attaining greater accuracy, the astrologer should then go further into calculating the inter-relationship of the planets vis-à-vis their permanent relationship, their positions in dissections of the birth chart known as Hora chart (division into ½), Dreshkana chart (division into one third i.e., 10 upon 30), Saptansha chart (division 7 upon 30), Navamsha chart (division: 9 upon 30), Dwadasansa chart (division: 12 upon 30), Trinsansa chart (division: one upon 30), and Shasatyansa chart (division: ½ upon 30). (You will learn in JYOTISH SMAGAM 11).

PLACE OF BIRTH AND TIME

The standardization method of sun rising time has shown that the sunrise time varies from place to place. Just as the warmth of the sunlight, and length of the day differs at different latitudes and longitudes the view of the planets, and consequently, their influence too varies from place to place. With the place of birth, the positional coordinates get fixed for the exact planetary and celestial combinations for that particular place (location) on the globe.

The birth chart may be though of as the ‘photo’ of the position of planets and the constellation ‘frozen’ at the time of the person’s birth. For the sake of simplicity, the observable sky above the earth is represented as a square or a circular apace and divided into 12 parts. Each part is called a ‘house’.

Taking the Sun as the major observable planet (interchangeably called star for astrological purpose) around which our conventions were made, each house represents an average of 2-hour period. Thus, these 12 houses represent the 24-hour movement of the Sun in relation to the earth at any given time and place on earth.

For this reason, in astrology, the place of birth, the date & time of birth are of vital importance. This data should be as accurate as possible to cast a correct birth chart.

Like with any other science, the accuracy of the input data is very essential to get accurate output results in this case accuracy predictions. Many astrologers do not bother to check the accuracy of the birth-chart and if the birth-chart they have used for predictions is inaccurate, the predictions are bound to be wrong. This simple fact cannot be emphasized enough.

STYLE / TYPES OF CHART

There are three main styles prevailing in India.

NORTH INDIAN STYLE

North Indian Style is in use from Kashmir to Central India. Northern Indian chart is the one in which the order of the houses is fixed. The ascendant is always put at the top in the center and counting of the houses is done in the anticlockwise direction.

In above chart, Scorpio {Vrishchik} has been taken as ascendant [lagan] and is given at the top central point. Hence, Scorpio is the First house, Sagittarius in the Second house, Capricorn as third house, Aquarius as in fourth house and so on.

In this method, the position of any house can be known at a glance and no counting from the ascendant is needed. That’s why this method is very popular in India.

SOTH INDIAN STYLE :

The positions of several signs are Fixed, but the position of the ascendant is changeable. The counting of houses is done in the clockwise direction, startign from the ascendant. In South Indian charts, the numbers denoting the signs are not written while in the North Indian charts the Lagna and other houses are indicated by putting the numbers of respective signs of place.

EAST INDIAN STYLES

East Indian style is commonly used in Assam, Bengal, Part of Orissa and Northern India’s Stated. This method is s compromise between North Indian and South Indian methods. In the sense that the Charta runs anti clockwise like the North Indian system and Signs have fixed position in the south style.

TECHNIQUE OF PREDICTING A HOROSCOPE :

For the benefit of readers, the prominent features of the Systems Approach are being discussed here. The life of the person are governed by planets and houses. The planets during their operating periods bestow the results on the person with the significations ruled by them, depending upon their position in a horoscope ie weak or strong planets.

IDENTIFYING THE WEAKNESS AND AFFLICTION OF PLANETS IS NOT AT ALL A DIFFICULT JOB AND CAN BE LEARNT BY BEGINNERS OR NON - ASTROLOGERS WITH THE HELP OF THIS E - BOOK OF ASTROLOGY.

The approach will guide you step by step of predicting a horoscope with efficiency, speedlu and accurately. It also helps in identifying the results of analysis in an unambigous manner, consistently without any confusions.

THE SIMPLE RULES ARE AS :

- Identifying the functional nature of planets in a natal chart.
- Next step is to judge the strength of a planets with techniques.
- THe most strongest planets and weak planets in a natal charts.
- The distinction between the week and afflicted planets.
- Judge teh aspects and conjuctions.
- The most malefic planet in a chart and its position in a chart.
- Check the dasa properly.

QUESTION BANK FOR AN COMPONENT OF A HOROSCOPE

Quest : Guruji, Please tell me, how The planets come in am ascendant?

Answer : This is good question. 1st question comes in a mind of a native. How the planets comes in a chart. What is the process or alotment procedure of getting a position in a chart. Simple Formula you can use it, which describe in a jyotish shastram by our sages :

In astrology we measure every thing in 30 degree. Same as we measure a difference between Delhi to Mumbai = 1500km say. Similarly total surface areas of zodiac signs has measured in 30 degree.

As you have above seen total surface area of Zodiac Signs divided into the angle of 360 degree. it means 30 degree for each zodiac signs.

Total hours in a day : 24;

Total Zodaic Signs : 12;

Each Zodiac Sing hour per day : 24 / 12 = 2hr;    2 hour = 120 minutes

30 degree = 120 minutes. ( For each zodiac sign )

1 degree will move in = 4 minutes. ie in every 4 minutes the zodiac sign move 1 degree; and appx 2 hours move forward to another zodiac sign; A complete block shift in every 2 hours. As in above example, 12-1-1872, 8.30, Delhi ; The position of planet is as

In above chart the degree of Ascendant is as 17 degree. it means

Total timings = 2 * 60 : 120 minutes

The balance time for Capricorn Ascendant = 13 * 4 : 52 Minutes; It means after 52 minutes Aquraius ascendant will rise in eastern origion.

Now check this horoscope at 9.10am; Delhi; 12-1-1982

Same chart at 9.10 am, The degree of Ascendant is 29 degree. All rest thing are same in chart. Now give little variation of time, check other kundli at different time :

Now check this horoscope at 9.40am; Delhi; 12-1-1982

The rest thing is same, but Ascendant is Aquarius has a degree of 9. The whole block has shifted to 12th house, ie planets and zodiac signs.

Some surface areas of Zodiacs are big and some are small. Similarly, few zodiac take little less time than 2 hours and some are little more time than 2 hours. Now you come to know how zodiac signs moves in a horoscope.
